This episode has everything, closure on storylines, shipping (yes
Jack and Sam again!) and fun! Hold onto your hats, here we go...
Carter gets into the lift (elevator to you guys across the pond)
on Level 22 and is greeted by Jonas, who is actually flirting with
a nurse! "With any luck I'll get sick!" is his big pulling
line!
Sam can't help grinning and teasing him about his flirting...
"With any luck I'll get sick?" Is her incredulous reply.
He is thinking of asking her out but says to Sam that on Kelona,
it is customary for a friend to ask! She exclaims "Oh it is
NOT!" and he asks her to at least see if she would be receptive!
Sam, just laughs and says "Jonas you are such a chicken sh1t!"
The expletive is kind of covered by the off world activation by
the Russian team.
They stupidly bring back an alien without authorisation, O'Neill
is paged and he is a little annoyed at Colonel Evanov (my apologies
for any spelling misinterpretation on any names that are new!) for
bringing Alebran back through the gate. Evanov explains that Nurrti
is responsible and that he thought that they would want to know,
because though they let her go in the first place. All very sarcastic...
You can imagine O'Neill's face at his inference!
'Ole General Hammond is annoyed at Colonel Evanov for bringing
an unauthorised alien back through the gate. He explains that he
is sure that they will want to help when they hear what he has to
say. Doc Fraiser is concerned about Alebran and asks to take him
to the isolation room three... ooooh, thing is everyone will
have already been exposed if he is carrying anything. Alebran explains
that Nurrti has a machine that looks inside them and changes their
DNA. She let him go because he questioned her experiments. He wants
them to help his people escape. They enter into an exposition to
bring up to date those that have missed Nurrti's nasty workings
from previous episodes and that it is much worse than before if
she is being able to change them straight away rather than by generations.
They agree to go and take Nurrti out but figure out that he may
have a Naquada bomb inside him like Cassandra did. They rush him
to x-ray...needless to say they don't get there in time as he
disintegrates in front of them, water splashing everywhere, very
much like the scene from the X-Men where that politician was mutated
and died with Storm unable to do anything. Fraiser tried to help
him, but could only stand by and watch... Nasty, ewww... well
you get the picture.
Hammond makes Jack take the Russian team, designated SG-4, with
him to the planet to capture Nurrti and free Alebran's people. Anyone
else think Alebran was named after a breakfast cereal that helps
certain digestive movements??? Three of SG-4 are left to guard the
gate, while Evanov accompanies our intrepid team to take out the
ten Jaffa Nurrti has guarding the fortress. It seems she doesn't
have many Jaffa to bow down to her, only Alebran's people, who think
that she is a God and is helping them from a nasty virus.
After a quick evaluation, Jack orders Carter and Jonas to create
a diversion. Yep, Jonas has learnt his Jack lessons well and sets
up C4 covertly. He does it so competently that you believe that
he is in the Airforce anyway. It's a shame we don't get to see Jack
teaching him. He is after all, different...cryptic I know, but
you will understand later. When they take out the guards and Jack
does a little sniper action on a running Jaffa with great finesse,
SG-1 leave Evanov behind to guard their sixes and enter the Fortress.
They discover four people so hideously disfigured and mutated,
wonderfully played by the way, and ask them about Nurrti. She is
away at the moment but they are expecting her back. They say they
don't want to be saved and that Nurrti is helping and caring for
them, by curing them of their illness. Jonas tries to get them to
understand that Nurrti caused the illness and then did this to them.
They tell SG-1 that they have to go back into the machine and Carter's
guess is that the Ancients built it. One of the mutants, Agar, say
that Jack is planning to kill Nurrti not capture her. He can read
minds. Jack wants to take her alive, as she is the only one that
can work the machine but he doesn't believe him.
Teal'c and Jonas go to the dungeon type place to see if they can
help, but the other mutant Roden, can use telekinesis, he takes
the staff weapon and the P90 off Jonas and Teal'c using the 'force'
throws them into the cells removing their radios. His hand movements
very akin to Yoda and the other force users in Star wars! May the
force be with you... I digress... He announces that she is
coming! It's plain they still think Nurrti is the reason they are
alive. Sam can't raise Jonas or Teal'c on the radio so she calls
Jack, who can't get in touch with the Russians either... He makes
his way back into the fortress.
The transport rings activate in the machine room bringing two Jaffa
down, who try to shoot at Carter. She zats them and then is zatted
herself by Nurrti, who had been invisible. She holds Carter hostage
in front of Jack. Jack tries to get her to help them but she refuses,
so as a Jaffa goes for Jack, he shoots him, but the mutant Roden
stops the bullet with this telekinetic ability.
Nurrti takes great pleasure in zatting Jack and tossing Carter
and Jack into a cell near Jonas and Teal'c. Once again our intrepid
team are in a dungeon locked away. They talk about the genetic manipulation
of the people and that she is still trying to create a super human
host. Carter says that the mutations are unstable and she isn't
there yet. It is amusing to note that Jack tests the bars before
trying to shake them, his lesson learnt from previous brushes with
being shocked by cell walls!
Evanov is bought in after Nurrti had been experimenting on him
and is almost unconscious and suffering like Alebran did. Nurrti
wants Carter next and Jack tries to make them take him first. There
is a real trust problem between him and the mutants as they still
don't believe that he would help them after delving into his mind.
Apparently Jack has deep in his head the will to kill everyone if
that is what it takes to get at Nurrti.
Nurrti, looking very like 'ole Anise the Tok'ra spray on costume
girlie, makes Carter go in the machine... Oh that nasty girl!
Evanov apologises for getting captured and not being able to get
a message off to the team, it is clear that he is in great pain,
Jack does look concerned, however much he hates the Russians, they
are still his responsibility and he feels for him. Carter is really
ill after her time in the machine and as they bring her back, Jack
rushes to catch her from falling, he helps her to a bed and then
shouts at them to take him next. Nurrti has ordered them to get
Jonas. As the cell opens, Jonas makes a rush at Ager and goes to
strangle him and Teal'c manages to hold the bars up until Roden
uses the force and stops them both. Jonas is a real fighter! Sadly
he is taken to Nurrti. Jack sits next to Carter, and says 'you made
it through, you're gonna be alright.' She replies 'no sir, I don't
think I am'... get the hankies out girls!
Nurrti examines Jonas and likes the look of what she sees, well
why not???? Who wouldn't I ask you? Jonas' character has really
evolved wonderfully and not to mention pleasing on the eye. Hey!
I'm just confirming what is already a consensus of opinion!
Evanov starts his downward spiral of mutation water boy and Carter
looks on knowing that it is not long before she too will succumb
to the waterfall. Teal'c tries to get the mutants to listen to the
fact that Nurrti is not a God but they will not. They try to understand
why Agar won't read Nurrti's mind and well here is the shipper moment
folks... Sam stifles a gasp, clearly in pain and Jack asks her
what's wrong, she says 'nothing I'm fine' and he orders her to get
some rest. She looks at Teal'c who also nods to her clearly worried.
Then... wait for it, she lays her head on Jack's shoulder...awwww...
It is then that the moment is broken by Evanov turning into water
fountain and wetting his bed in a big way, sheesh there is a time
and place for dying and not in the middle of a shipper scene!
Back to Jonas, who awakes all nice and comfy on a bed full of pillows,
one of which he is hugging, with Nurrti watching him as he sleeps.
She is soooooo taken with Jonas because he is different. He is more
advanced than others and she wants to make him better without mutating
him. She offers him the power of the advanced attributes he has
already seen in Agar and Roden. She is literally all over him...
yes very up close and personal and wants him to join her, to rule
the galaxy. He says he like his life as it is now. Ok I don't know
how Jonas didn't notice her boobs poking out, I mean he is oblivious
to her charms, though does string her along until he explains that
he would kill her first.
Corin and Jaqueline (Nurrti) are fantastic here, very believable
and it was amusing to see Jonas deny her what she wants. Naturally
she strikes him to the ground and does her glowy eyed thing. She
asks for O'Neill next! They take Jonas back to the cells and Jack,
Teal'c and Jonas try to get them to read Nurrti's mind. As they
move Jack along he carries on his plea to look into her mind.
Jack talks to Nurrti about the time he let her go (episode Rite
of Passage) and asks her to fix Carter and she can do what she likes
to him. She simply says I'll do what I like anyway. Agar gasps after
reading her mind and yells to Roden what happened! Roden, the force
user, sorry, uses his telekinetic ability to kill the Jaffa guards
then turns on Nurrti, using the force to hold her in the air by
her neck. There is the usual I am your God thing from Nurrti...
Jack almost pleads with him not to kill her, as they need her to
fix Carter and adds that she is the only one that can undo what
she has done to their people. He breaks her neck anyway because
she deserved it and Jack's face falls.
She was Carter's only chance, his words... Not so, well we do
have another six episodes to go with Amanda in it, sarcasm I know
is the lowest form of wit! Agar looked into Nurrti's mind and extracted
what he needed to help Carter and the others. Now there's a surprise!
Jack rushes to Carter, who any minute, is about to turn into a little
stream and picks her up to take her to the machine. Agar fixes her
to as she was before and she steps off the machine platform to Jack's
waiting arms of support.
Hail Dorothy, the wicked witch is dead! A quote used by Jack to
explain the death of Nurrti, is totally lost on Agar and Roden!
SG-1 offers help and support and Carter wants to study the machine
once they have all been returned to normal. She still looks a little
worse for wear. Roden explains that they are going to destroy the
machine once everyone is fixed. Jack says to Carter 'don't you think
that's for the best' and he asks 'To Oz?' to the others and embarrassingly
Carter says 'Thank you' to them as they leave, almost an apology
for Jack's Wizard of Oz comments!
All in all probably one of the best episodes of the season so far,
it was thoroughly enjoyable, had the right amount of suspense and
is a great story. Incidentally, the story was written by Nurrti,
Jaqueline Samunda, herself and James Tichenor, the effects chap.
The make-up for the mutants is unsurpassed and the actors, Dion
Johnstone (Chaka the Unas and Lt Johnson from previous episodes)
and Alex Zahara are fantastic as Roden and Agar.
Oh and who can forget the interactions between Jonas and dirty
Nurrti, tart of the universe, oh no sorry Anise has that! Just kidding.
Jack and Sam shipping was good, particularly as over the last few
weeks Jack has been tortured, put on trial for murder, become MIA
and hit by shrapnel by Maybourne's obsession with grenades...
only natural for them to get all mushy at the thought of Sam dying.
I was just waiting for the comment about Jonas having to spend time
in the infirmary by Sam as a result of the testing! Maybe he will
get his wish to spend time with the nurse after all! Jonas, a little
under-utilised in the previous fifteen episodes, has finally come
into his own in this episode, plus Corin has proven that he is the
right man for the right job in filling the gap left by Michael Shanks,
truly a joy to watch.
