Title: Unnatural Selection (Prometheus Part II)

The Lowdown

Alright, after Thor showed up, he explains that he has not come to save them but that they need their help. So what have they done for us lately? The relationship between the Asgard and the Tau'ri has been pretty one sided, with the odd exception of nick of the time type thing the Asgard have going. There are some great Jack one-liners. "You need someone dumb enough?" among many laugh out loud moments...

Thor explains that the Replicators would not be interested in such vastly inferior technology like their ship, into their own The Asgard need them for a task that they are uniquely suited for... "You need someone dumb enough?" Jack quips but as Thor explains that the Asgard council had realised that they could not win the war with the Replicators they would have to come up with a way to defeat them as they had overrun the home world Othalla. It turns out that, they found that Reese, whom they could not repair, had a single operating core programme, bear with me here it's a Carter and Thor technobabble moment, with which to provide a homing becon to call ALL the Replicators in the galaxy to go to. Anyone else think that is a dumb idea?

The Asgard laid a trap using Earth based materials and set a timer to create a sub space bubble, point one six light years... at which time slowed by a factor of...believe me when I say you don't need that info, alright you asked for it, ten to the fourth power...basically speaking for every year the Replicators spend in the bubble, it's ten thousand years for everyone else. Thus giving the Asgard the chance to find a way to stop it. But their plan failed and they don't know why. The time dilation device was encased in a solid Neutronium shell and set with a time delay, so that they could evacuate the planet.

Nothing happened when it was set to go. Seems that the Replicators eat through it and stopped it. So, he wants them fly through Replicator space, to repair the device and activate it. Cue the music... No small feat for the amazing SG-1 methinks...one little thing that nagged my thoughts here was that Jonas was not introduced to Thor. I guess he is the new boy and doesn't count until he saves at least one planet!

Jack says, "Thor buddy, there's no way." Thor explains that all worlds are under threat, not just the Asgard, but Earth too, as they have great natural resource of which their civilisation it built upon. What's left of the Asgard are waiting in ships between his galaxy and Earth's to hear if Jack will help, as SG-1 represents the last hope. Jack is pensive and thinking on the idea, as Thor explains that they have done all they can and it's down to them. Jack reconsiders as Thor says that there is no other way.

As Jack 'reconsiders' Sam, approaches Thor and asks if they really know what they are asking of them. Thor harps on about the projectile weapons that were so effective the last time and Jack blows... saying "Yeah well we don't have any projectile weapons with us at the moment and according to Carter, we're a long way from..." Thor tows them back to Earth as he speaks and Jack finishes with "...home..." The contents of the armory are 'beamed up' along with food for the journey and 'appropriate attire'! Jack asks if Thor has done the paperwork! And that he hadn't said yes yet! And... that it wasn't up to him!
This is Jack on his knees! A first methinks. Meanwhile back at the SGC they are trying to work out why everything is missing, half the food stores all the weapons and the reporters that were on the X-303 were found in the SGC. Then Jack turns up in the SGC by hologram, telling them what happened and recommended a name for the new ship!

They didn't go for it, they approved the new mission but not the name of the ship. Carter said "sir, we cant call it the Enterprise..." It ends up keeping the X-303 name as Jack thinks that Prometheus, being a Greek tragedy is not good as a name for a ship and he is still pouting as they wouldn't let him name it Enterprise. There is a smashing moment with the food stores, where Jonas and Teal'c are sitting on stuff eating Ice cream. Thor forgot the fridge; well they eat food blocks and have no need for freezers! Jack reaches to try Teal'c's ice cream, who pulls away and gives him a nasty look then places an unopened pot of ice cream in Jacks hand. Halfway through the exposition between Jack and Jonas and Teal'c about how evil or not evil the Replicators are, Teal'c decides he wants Jack's Ice cream and takes it off him, then exchanges it with his eaten pot! Absolutely hilarious. It's about time we saw more of Chris Judge's sense of humour.

They come to the bridge as the ship slows, but Thor says there is a problem as the time dilation device was activated, but sped up inside by a factor of ten squared! Jack says "What is wrong with you people, time machines are not good, even we know that!" Thor modified the ship for their passage into the bubble and then moves to a safe distance to monitor them. Jack is really funny when he gets to sit in the 'Captains chair' and fiddles. Does that guy ever leave any prop be, even if it's screwed down?

While they travel, Jack is teaching Jonas how to load the P90, and Jonas complains that his hands are getting blisters but he still complies until Jack is happy. They are scanned by a Replicator ship and go to the planet unmolested. Clearly they are too primitive for them. As they land, a very dodgy landing I might add, they discover that the planet is entirely covered in Replicator blocks. Walking in the landscape they approach the only structure on the planet. Jonas gets to carry the massive pack whilst the others are free with the guns.
As they enter the structure, Carter goes to work on the device but, they are interrupted by a human... or so they think.

Then five of them surround the team, one obviously being the leader. They cannot allow Carter to change the settings on the device, so he and Jack have a little tete a tete. Ending in Jack shooting them because they reveal they are Replicators. The whole team shoot out, and eventually stop as Replicators in their spidery form, surround them. Clearly they like playing with Lego! Well, when you spend years on a barren planet you have got to do something! The head guy, turns out to be number ONE or First as his brethren call him, controls everyone and everything, makes out that they are nice Replicators and convinces them to drop the 'projectile weapons'.

He extends a hand of friendship to Jack, who takes it, but...there's always a but, he squeezes Jack's hand till he drops to his knees (always the knees) and sticks his free hand into Jack's head! Talk about evasive surgery. Brings a new meaning to cleaning out the cobwebs. The others do the same to the rest of the team. The Replicator head guy, delves into Jack's mind and they are in the gateroom where he says this place must be important to you and reveals the iris deactivation code, 903224637. Jack says that's close...
And because Jack concealed something in his memory, he made him relive the memory of Charlie's death and says its all Jack's fault... that he should blame himself and that if he conceals the memories again, this will be his punishment, to see Charlie's death over and over. The Stargate in Jack's memory lights up and they go through to every place they have ever been, so that the Replicators know about all their allies and planets. Nasty fellow.

Our intrepid team wake in the ship, with monster headaches and they can't remember anything, they were out 37 hours ship time. Carter talks about a ship overload that can blow up the Replicators, but doesn't know if it would work. Jonas wants to talk to the Replicators and Jack explains that they are Reppppplicatorrrrrs, he hates the 'bug people' as the Replicators, that look like they do. Freaky really. They are made of mini rep blocks, like Nanites. When they finish their argument, they end up in the engine room where Carter is talking to FIFTH, who tells them that he bought them there and that FIRST has invited them to dinner. There is a dining table made of Replicators with their food on it. Not prepared but just as they found it on the ship. A new Replicator SIX, joined them at the table and FIRST invites them to sit.

First describes how the Replicators created him, his 'brethren' studied Reese and find out about her. He explains how he was able to get through the shell of Neutronium and then increase the time within the bubble. Apparently Fifth was a mistake, because he is more like them than the Replicators, he tries to stop First from exploring their memories. First insists on Fifth visiting their memories to see who they are going to conquer. Carter volunteers to be Fifth's experience, and instead of putting his hand in Carter, he touches her forehead with his and takes her to his hiding place in his mind. Carter convinces him to help them, and says that he can come with them. The Black widow striking again? Fifth is clearly taken with Carter.

He agrees and Carter is the first to wake. Fifth makes the necessary adjustments and helps sort the time dilation device. Jack orders Teal'c and Jonas to get back to the ship and start it up. He then orders Carter to set the timer for five minutes, but signals to set for three, so that Fifth does not know. There is a nice play of expressions between Jack and Sam as she realises that it will not give Fifth the time to join them.

They leave as First surrounds Fifth with Replicators and tries to get him to stop the timer. Fifth is upset because Carter promised, the device is set off and Thor sends his congratulations. Jack is reflective and Jonas and Carter talk about them using his (Fifth's) humanity against him. Carter speaks out, but Jack makes it quite clear about who is going to stop the Replicators if they didn't do it and says we did the right thing, even though in his face you can see he doesn't agree with himself.
